This Year's Model Updates:

A 5.9-liter V8 making 245 horsepower and 345 pound-feet torque powers the Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited, making it the mightiest of all Jeeps. With the addition of the 5.9, the putrid Orvis model dies. Two new colors and "next-generation" airbags round out the changes.

Pros:
  • Lightweight unibody construction, excellent on and off-road manners, optional V-8, standard ABS, dual airbags, lots of standard equipment
Cons:
  • Spare tire hogs cargo area, engines hog gas, not as roomy inside as some competitors, price climbs rapidly as options are added

  • So Far, Pretty Good! - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

When I first bought this the dealer gave me a 30 day warranty. Good thing. In the first week, the front brakes needed new rotors, and the a/c ran hot and needed a new evap. cylinder. The dealer fixed everything. 2 months later, The check engine light came on and I replaced the speed sensor. A week after that, the drivers side electric window motor burned out. I replaced that and it wasnt easy! I have now had the car for a little over a year and have had no further problems. Hopefully it stays that way. Although I have grown attached to my JEEP, I wouldnt buy another.

I purchased this vehicle for its style and functionality. I am a Photographer and Videographer. I needed a vehicle where I can carry my equipment without tearing up the interior of my vehicle. This vehicle has never been to dealership for any major repair other factory recalls. Easy to work on myself. I do my own oil changes, change belts, hoses, brakes, shocks, and tuneups. It has been very reliable and joy to drive. I can go pretty much wherever a 4 wheel drive vehicle can go. I travel to great Northwest up to Canada and back. I would never buy anything else but another Jeep. There is no equal

What can I say, I own a 98 Grand with about 105,000 miles on it. I put a 2" spring spacer lift on with 31 x 10.5 tires...It has a meaner stance to it now. Truck has been great! I would definitely buy another one. It looks good enough to take the girlfriend out or go mudding in holes somewhere. I also love the power...I absolutley love this truck!

  • Like a member of the family - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

We bought this Jeep for the wife and kid, used it for a year and then #2 showed up, so we went to a minivan. Thats when I took over. This truck has been used for beach driving, mountain 4-wheeling, daily commuter and at one point I used it for carpentry work and it was loaded down with a compressor, saws, nail guns, etc. Ive carried 6x6s from Home Depot in it, 10 sheets of plywood on the roof; this truck just wont stop. Gas mileage is now getting to me, but I just cant let go of it, its like family. Change the oil, keep it clean and it will run forever.

  • Not bad for a Jeep - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Other than the fact that its a pure gas hog, I love this vehicle. I average about 13 or 14 mpg in the city and about 18 or 19 mpg on the highway. Theres plenty of storage, which is nice, and the factory stereo system was so good that I kept it. Thats a first for me. Usually, the first thing I do is yank out the factory stereo and pop in a high-powered sound machine. Its also very fun to drive. As far as comfort though, its not the best car. Its a little cramped for me, plus the steering wheel is a little hard to turn. Other than that, its fine.

Great SUV, no trail unaccessable, hauls and drives great. Never had a problem mechanically or comfort wise. Great car overall.

  • Worst car I ever Owned - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought the car with 25,000 miles. I have 92,000.00. Between 55,000 and 92,000 I have replaced rear end, two power steering units, 2 water pumps, and transmission. I have a 96 Honda Accord with 190,000 I gave to my daughter Ive replaced tires and a battery.

I have had other Jeeps out there and this one is the first one that ever fell apart so fast out of the three. Unlike other Jeeps I had I dont trust the 4by system in this Jeep. It came with a Select Trac that does get me stuck at times unless you like to creep in low! The ABS light comes one with long trips resulting in a loss of power brakes and steering! It does have its up and downs and right now its and an all time low. I would probally have gave this Jeep a better rating if I had bought it brand new. I bought it 4 yrs old w/ 100k! I will say this truck has tried to hold up with me. Ive put 25k in 9 months until it died!

This SUV was a gem. Not a single problem until 100,000 miles and that was only minor. Very capable off-road performance as well.

  • Guess I got lucky - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It has over 162K on it and still runs great. I have to replace the brake rotors too often but other than that its been very reliable. It failed to get me to my destination only twice. Once, with about 20K miles, the float in the gas tank failed, resulting in an inaccurate gas tank reading. Consequently I ran out of gas. Then at about 155K the ignition switch failed so it wouldnt start. Im going to keep it until it dies! I do some minor off roading, nothing too tough - more ruts and rocks than anything else. I have the V6, and it gets 17-19 MPG.
